Last week I watched Disney’s “Pocahontas” purely in the mindset to research the art of the movie. I was pleasantly surprised that the art direction was done really well, especially compared to “Hercules” of which I had good memories of from my childhood, but turns of I’m not a huge fan of the visuals any more now that I’ve re-watched that too. There was a sterile, airbrushed quality to it that didn’t wow me at all.

In Pocahontas, everything from the mood, colorscript, style, composition and animation worked really well. I noticed the environments were a little Eyvind Earle’ish, which is always a big plus!

So this week’s illustration inspired by Pocahontas and Eyvind Earle:

In other news, I just bought a book called “Ganesha’s sweet tooth” by Sanjay Patel (artist) and Emily Haynes (writer). It’s a short children’s story and the illustrations are amazing :) I already had Sanjay Patel’s previous book “Ramayana: Divine Loophole” and the art there is pure gold. After that it’s hard not to start collecting the rest of his work :)
