Today was one of those nice Saturday’s when we did nothing but draw, write, and take photographs of pages that are coming up in the near future. While these pages are not released yet, they are spoiler free and without dialogue. If you are interested of purchasing this, or any other RFR page then hit us up on the store or get in touch with us.

So, enjoy these photos of Kaija drawing, and click to enlarge for some detail linework. See you on Monday for the next page update!

Drawing the rooftops of RFR

intro

One of our favorite things in life is experimenting with art.

Be it with written words, drawing, storytelling or even photography – we love to mess around. It’s what keeps everything fresh, interesting and fun.

It’s easy to get stuck with your creative influences; photographers look at other photographs, illustrators at other illustrators and bla bla, you get the idea. Everyone tends to look for easy influences, because it’s safe and convenient and you can’t really go wrong. But you can’t really grow out of the box then either.

The whole Run Freak Run experience has been one big playground for me. Besides writing and lettering, I get to battle website code and graphic design. Extremely frustrating at times, but super educational and it has improved my professional concept art work in ways I wouldn’t have imagined.

For a while, we’ve been trying my dearest with photography in the mix and just to make things more complicated, we decided to mix in video as well!

We’ve made one mood video of Kaija drawing a future RFR-page from the upcoming chapter (starting tomorrow!) and we mixed in music from Indie Folker. Check it out, it’s just under this text!

It’s quite a lot of production work, so we don’t know where we go with this video thing yet, but we’re going to keep experimenting with music mood videos to behind-the-scenes office tours to what ever we happen to fancy.

So bear with us, stay interested and thanks for taking part of this journey! :)

And now check out the video and leave us comments!

Run Freak Run behind-the-scenes: The Chamber of Saint Dominic

hell yeah making of comic

One of my favorite things in the world is taking photos of Kaija drawing.

Not only because it’s so hypnotizing to watch the pages come to life from nothing, or because I love her, but because I’m always giddy about the opportunity to post it on the blog and share with you guys.

I know it’s not the same as being here, its only pictures after all. It won’t really explain the creative process and the why’s and what’s that are happening. I don’t even think we can understand why we do everything. During creation, so much of it happens subconsciously, and while we can justify and explain the routs we took after, the process itself relies on guts and self-confidence.

So, tonight Kaija was working on one of the pages for the next chapter. We’re gonna show you guys more of the Queen, and her servants and how echo’s, (remember the baby) are located. Personally I think it’s going to be one of our best chapters yet, but I’m biaised.

Kaija’s been tweeting and facebooking her progress constantly and you should follow those streams if you want to see more of that!

New additions to our shop and inking videos

3 Comments on New additions to our shop and inking videos

Once again I was surprised to find non edited inking videos, abandoned in a forgotten folder. I’m getting the feeling that I need to revise my system. And by that I mean that there’s way too many things I need to remember and it’s obvious that I never will. I should make a list that I can check off every week. I already have one for weekends, and it definitely keeps me moving seamlessly forward from one finished task to another.

Yes, that should do it.

And if you think this list making is starting to sound obsessive compulsive, don’t worry. Most probably in about five months time I’ll be looking into those same video folders, as perplexed at myself as I have been every time so far :D

We also framed and added the page to our Etsy-store. Take a look at the awesome photos Silver took of it:

Banner Saga, Scalzi and Beksinski

Dun, dun, duuuuun!

There’s rarely a game so stunning that I’ll stop everything just to stare at it.

I’m an avid gamer, and I’ve played so many games through the years that most of them have started to blend together at some point, all trapped in the same art troupes, just repeating each other. You might even say I’m bored with a lot of the new games, and BOOM then comes in Banner Saga with it’s beautiful, hand-drawn art, viking themed fantasy adventure. I first heard about Stoic Games and Banner Saga through their kickstarter, which succeeded netting them enough capita and a fanbase to create the game.

It’s unique art direction is what really makes it different. The graphic backgrounds are inspired by Eyvind Earle, the legendary art director, and the animations remind me of old Disney movies mixed with He-man. No matter how much 3D games keep pushing those shaders and resolutions, there’s something fantastical in 2D that 3D has yet to achieve.

The gameplay is solid, a tad slow at times and it can take a while to get the story rolling. But while there’s room to improve, the art and the setting (VIKINGS WOOO!) themselves are worth many times the price of the game. If you’re a gamer, then I recommend supporting this little indie gem from Texas, Austin and grabbing it from Steam!

TLDR: Epic Disney Viking Adventure is stunning.
banner saga

All the towns and cities are illustrated like this. Easily the best looking game for the year.

banner saga

Travelling bits of the game are full of decision making mini-games. Most decisions have severe consequences.

In-game action turn-based combat. It’s fun, simple and fast. Also the animations are stellar.

Speaking of stories,

I still haven’t lost my bad habit of buying more books than I have time to read. But – I’m trying!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of finishing Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. It was a solid and fun hard science-fiction adventure that kept me interested the whole way through. To be honest, I didn’t want to put it down. If I had to describe more, I’d say it’s like Mass Effect and Starship Troopers (novel, not the movie) put together, at least that’s the vibe I got. There’s a universe to explore, alien races to meet and fight with, uncomprehensible technology of the future and philosophical speculation over the morality of it all. I’m pretty sure I’ll pick up the sequels too, right after I clear my read-list.
Next books are: Huckleberry Finn, Perfume and The Bone Season.
TLDR: I like books and sci-fi, and so should you.
old mans war by john scalzi

What happens when a 75-year old gets a young, enhanced body and is sent to war in the space colonies? Lots of stuff, that’s what.

Art is a funny thing.

No matter how many artists you know, art books you’ve bought or how many hours you’ve scanned through internet, there’s always an artist you’ve never heard of before.

To me, it was Zdzisław Beksiński, a now passed Polish contemporary artist whose paintings are made of dreams. They are macabre, dark, twisted and full of grotesque imaginary. Just the way I like it. It has this vibe of apocalypse and fantasy and while it’s kind of dated, in the sense that everyone’s into gritty and realistic art at the moment, I still find it captivating. Maybe this means that high-fantasy is making a come-back? After all, Game of Thrones was kind of a counter-attack against the high elves and paladins fantasy, and boy have the roles reversed since. Thank you to our new friend Seda for introducing this artist to me :)
Check it out, and I hope you enjoy the trip!
TLDR; Here’s some weird paintings.

Vining in the New Year

6 Comments on Vining in the New Year

Happy New Year everyone! Let’s make it a good one :)

During the holidays me and Silver found a new medium to play around with: Vine. With it you can take short videos with your phone and upload them instantly on a social network of your preference. Kind of like instagram for videos. It’s been a fun and easy way of recording some of the behind the scenes stuff.

First off, the latest page I was working on. I also recorded the full process, you’ll see that on youtube when the page comes out:

More witch portraits. I needed to make them to figure out the different characters so no witch looks the same. We’ll put them on our Etsy-shop later next week:

Now that you’ve seen the Vines, I’m really curious if this is a method of seeing the comic making process that you guys enjoy. We won’t drop it any time soon, since it’s really been fun recording these, but if you have any ideas about what you want to see more of, we’d be very interested to hear about it.

What is the first creative moment you remember?

One of the weirdest and most entertaining Christmas presents I've ever gotten. I'm loving it!

One of the weirdest and most entertaining Christmas presents I’ve ever gotten. I’m loving it!

So, it’s almost Christmas for everyone else, but we’ve already had our celebrations with friends, we bought our Christmas tree about two weeks ago and we’ve torn through every last one of our presents. Spreading the festivities over a dozen days, ending with some more Christmas food on the 24th, has been a nice ending to the year.

One of my Christmas presents from Silver was Twyla Tharp’s book “The creative habit: Learn it and use it for life”. I’m reading it now and I’m enjoying it immensely. It’s my kind of a book. Not only it portrays a creative person’s worldview, but it also involves self exploration and breaking down and evaluating her habits and tendencies. I love that she isn’t giving a 1, 2, 3-guidelines to being creative. Anything you can boil down to couple of bullet points is bound to be simplistic. Instead, she takes a more philosophical approach to a multitude of aspects of creativity that she has found important. The ideas she’s put forward so far (I’m not even halfway through the book) are interesting and a great jumpboard for further thought and interpretation.

In the name of taking the time to understand your own “creative DNA”, as she calls it, Twyla Tharp came up with 33 questions that could help in unearthing some answers. I tend to not think much of questionnaires, but she had earned my respect by then, so I gave it a go. The very first one gave me an interesting conclusion: “What is the first creative moment you remember?” I had to pause for a moment to sift through my brain, but I did come up with an answer. I must have been around four years old. I remember sitting at a corner table in kindergarten. In front of me is a messy pile of drawings, next to me sits an older kindergarten teacher. I always thought of her as the grandma of the teachers and I liked her a lot. She was calm and unobtrusive. (The overly lively ones always made me a little uncomfortable.) We sat at that corner table together, in silence and drew or did some crafty stuff for hours.

So that’s the first memory I can recall, but what struck me as surprising was that I can’t remember what I was doing, apart from the vague notion of it including a pen and a paper. The drawing didn’t seem to be very important. The strongest element of that memory was the total feeling of calm. Calm from solitude, calm from concentration – calm from just being allowed to be in my head. It’s the same feeling I have now when I draw or write and it’s the same feeling I had as a kid while drawing.

From as early as I remember I was encouraged to draw, and was left to myself while doing so. Not only was this an acceptable kind of antisocial behavior and consequently a lifesaver back then, but what I take out of this is that drawing was, and is just the means to an end. It provides a place where I can tune out the outside world and tune in all the stories I want to be able to tell, put feelings into words and break down experiences. The actual process of putting down a line is not as mesmerising to me as taking my thoughts and getting them out of my head and feel them materialize in front of me. Whether it’s drawing or writing or something else in the future, it shouldn’t matter that much. Or, I hope it won’t.

What is the first creative moment you remember?

Photos from the studio, 5 days to RFR anniversary.

Another Friday well spent.

It’s kind of strange that we’re getting so close to the RFR 1-year anniversary, only 5 days left now. It’s been an interesting first year and a lot has happened. I’ll put some proper thoughts about the year later on and until then, I hope you enjoy theses photos from the studio.

The best part in my nights is that I get to see how these pages progress from simple text to thumbnails, concepts and eventually full blown art works and I’m happy I get to share that this way.
